Sport Fishing

Countless quiet lakes, mighty rivers, lagoons, streams, and the extensive Atlantic coastline make Argentine Patagonia a prime destination for sport fishing. Patagonian waters offer ideal conditions for sport fishing in its various forms. Depending on the area, you can practice fly casting, spinning, or trolling amidst the exciting nature of the south of the world. In perfect harmony with nature, Patagonian cabins, resorts, inns, and hotels offer a warm welcome. Fishing lodges also offer fly-tying rooms, exclusive environments, and specific services to enjoy the best days of fishing. At the various Patagonian destinations, you can hire expert bilingual fishing guides and rent the necessary equipment if you do not already have it. Famous for their size and wildness, trout such as rainbow, brown, steelhead fontinalis or brook trout, silver trout, landlocked salmon, and Pacific salmon fascinate lovers of this sport in the waterways of Patagonia. Native species such as perch and Patagonian silverside are also very attractive in the area. Sharks, sea basses, whitebaits, breams, rays, sticklebacks, and sole complete a unique offering in the warm waters of the Atlantic coast. Season and permits: The fishing season runs primarily from November to mid-April or May. However, sport fishing on the Atlantic coast and in some Patagonian rivers is open year-round. Patagonian waters are protected and monitored to guarantee athletes the excellence and quality of the resources; therefore, permits are mandatory and must be displayed conspicuously in most areas. These can be obtained at each destination from provincial tourist offices or designated businesses. Catch and release is the method practiced in most areas of Patagonia, although in some provinces there are specific areas where catches can be made.

La Pampa

In the province of La Pampa, sport fishing finds excellent locations in the “Don Tomás” lagoon (Santa Rosa) and “La Arocena” lagoon (General Pico). These lagoons are authorized by the General Directorate of Natural Resources and are subject to the health regulations and regulations established by the municipalities in question.

Species such as silverside, toadfish, tararira, and toothfish can be caught during the season, which runs from early November to late August. On the Colorado River, the season begins in December and ends in late May. It allows for the capture of trout (rainbow or brown), perch, and silverside, always limiting the number of specimens to the maximum allowed in each case. Common carp can also be caught year-round in the province’s aquatic environments.

Neuquén

The mouth of the Chimehuín River, the Correntoso river, and the mouth of the Limay river in the south of the province, and the Collón Cura, Caleufú, Quillén, Malleo, Aluminé, Pulmarí, Traful, and Ruca Choroy rivers are home to wild rainbow, brook, and brown trout. These waterways have gained international recognition and are a must-see for sport fishing lovers. To the north, the Trocomán, Reñi Leuvu, Trolope, and Nahueve rivers, and the Varvarco lagoon are ideal for the high catches achieved during the season. The peace of the lakes Huechulafquen, Tromen, Traful, Paimún, Aluminé, Nahuel Huapí and Lolog, among others, captivates fishermen every fishing season in Neuquén.

Río Negro

The mountain is the strategic hub for a network of mountain rivers and lakes easily accessible to sport fishermen. Melted snow, which feeds the river from the upper reaches to the sea, Río Negro, one of Patagonia’s most important waterways, is a 1,000-km fishing corridor that meets the most varied needs. The Atlantic coast is distinguished by its warm waters, creating a privileged environment with over 400 km of extension, where fishing is possible from the shore or from a boat. In the Río Negro steppe, the Valcheta stream is ideal for catching rainbow trout, and the Maquinchao stream basin offers silverside and trout. The streams originated in the mountain foothills that enter the steppe are ideal for lightweight equipment and dry flies.

Chubut

A dozen localities where you can enjoy this sport provide a perfect setting for lovers of this field, between river basins and lakes nestled in mountain valleys. The mountain range offers fishing lodges for enthusiasts who travel from different latitudes to practice this sport. In the Chubut region, most of the fishing practice is fly fishing, or “Fly Casting,” using the catch-and-release method, a synonym of environmental preservation.

Santa Cruz

In the province of Santa Cruz, the river of the same name stands out for its steelhead trout population, a magnificent variety of large and robust rainbow trout. The Coyle, La Leona, Rubens, Penitente, Jeinimeni, Los Antiguos, and Gallegos rivers offer trout fishing. Lakes “Argentino,” Roca, Viedma, Cardiel, Buenos Aires, San Martín, Pueyrredón, Posadas, Strobel, and Ghío offer species such as salmon, rainbow trout, lake trout, and brown trout.

Tierra del Fuego

Brook trout, landlocked salmon, rainbow trout, sea trout, and brown trout are species caught in the northern part of “Isla Grande,” especially in the city of Río Grande, considered the “International Trout Capital.” Some alternatives for practicing this sport are: Río Grande, the Ewan and Menéndez rivers; the lakes “Bombilla,” Suderland, “Palacio,” Margarita, Santa Laura, and San Ricardo lagoons; and the lakes Fagnano and “Escondido.”
